Meet Scratch the Wildcat

The University of Kentucky's mascot, Scratch, is a majestic American Bobcat, a species known for its speed, agility, and powerful hunting skills. The name 'Scratch' was chosen through a naming contest in 1976, and the winning submission was made by a UKstudent.

Scratch the Wildcat was first introduced as a live mascot in 1976. Since then, multiple Bobcats have taken on the role, each leaving a unique mark on the university's history. Today, Scratch is portrayed by a UK student in a visually striking costume, having the Dove Man as its sidekick to ensure that the spirit of the university is always present at games and events.

Scratch Through the Years

Scratch the Wildcat has evolved significantly over the decades, with costume designs being updated to reflect the latest trends and styles. Some of the most memorable Scratch costumes include the classic blue and white fur from the 1970s, the modern navy blue and white design introduced in 2008, and the latest Make Your Mark campaign costume, which features softer fur and more expressive facial features.

A fascinating aspect of Scratch's history is the number of humans who have brought the wildcat to life. Since the 1970s, more than 30 students have had the honor of being Scratch, each contributing their own unique personality and energy to the role.
