Guess My State: Can You Tell Where I Live Based on These Words?

By Matthew Walker

Ever played the game where you try to guess someone's location by clues they drop? We're going to apply that to words here. You're going to give me a set of words, and I'll do my best to guess which U.S. state you live in. Sound like fun?

Before we start, let's set some ground rules. I'll try not to make assumptions based on stereotypes. I'll give you an honest, data-driven guess based on the words you provide and their popularity in different regions. Ready to play?

Regional Lexical Distinctiveness

The game works because each U.S. state has its unique linguistic landscape, shaped by its history, culture, and population. Some words might be more common in certain regions due to regionalisms, dialects, or local slang.

For instance, you might hear 'soda' more frequently in the Northeast and Midwest, while 'pop' reigns supreme in the Midwest and Plains states. 'Coke' is often used as a generic term for any kind of soda in the South. These small linguistic nuances can point us in the right direction.

Regional Vocabulary clusters

Geolinguistics, the study of language geography, can help us narrow down possibilities. For example, 'sub', 'waist', and 'subway' sandwich all lean towards the Northeast. 'Dynamite', 'hoagie', and 'grinder' hint towards the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast. 'Bubbler', 'pop', and 'soda pop' lean Midwest.

Similarly, place-specific terms like 'barbecue', 'po'boy', and ' kolache' can help pinpoint the South and Southwest respectively.

Idioms and Slang

Idioms and slang can also give us clues. If you use 'y'all' or 'all y'all', we're probably looking at the Southern or Southwestern states. If you say 'yinz' instead of 'you', you're likely from Pittsburgh or Western Pennsylvania. 'ренты', ' Wassup?', 'jimmies', or 'gravy' can place us in different parts of the Northeast.

Regional accents can also influence word choice and pronunciation, but that's a bit harder to gauge via text alone.

Popular Culture and Local Influences

Sometimes, popular culture and local influencers can also sway language usage. For instance, 'fidelities' and 'ögres' might tip us off to a certain New EnglandHeaders: state if they're used frequently. Local sports teams, events, or Inside jokes can also provide clues.

A mention of a specific local event, landmark, or team can really narrow down our search. For example, if you say 'Emerald City', 'Husky', or 'Cougar', I'm probably going to guess the Pacific Northwest.

Local Cuisine

Food can be a powerful indicator too. Mention 'lobsta' rolls, 'chowdah', or 'NEwowa' and I'll immediately think of New England. 'Philly cheesesteak', 'tastykake', or 'wooder' ice might lead us to Philadelphia or Eastern Pennsylvania. 'Pitaya' bowls, 'avocado toast', and 'kale' hint towards California.

Local dishes or unique food terms can provide strong evidence for our guess. 'Biscuits and gravy', 'chicken fried steak', or 'pecan pie' can suggest Texas or the South.

Local Attractions and Landmarks

Mentions of local attractions, landmarks, or natural features like mountains, forests, or bodies of water can also guide us. If you say 'The Rockies', 'Mile High City', or mention 'Colorado' frequently, I'll assume you're from Colorado or nearby regions.

'Mount Rushmore', 'Black Hills', or 'Deadwood' can help us narrow down to the Dakotas. 'The Strip' or 'Sin City' won't leave much doubt that you're from Nevada.

So, let's give this a try! Share some words that you use frequently, and I'll do my best to guess your state. And remember, this is all in good fun. Language is rich and diverse, so don't be surprised if my guess isn't spot-on. Happy word-pondering!
