India Flag: Symbol of Unity and Pride

By Michael Thompson
AD

The Indian flag, also known as the 'Tiranga' meaning 'tricolor,' is a national symbol that embodies the unity and richness of India's diverse culture and history. It is a rectangular flag consisting of three equal-sized stripes in the colors deep saffron, white, and dark green. At the center, there is a navy blue Ashoka Chakra, a 24-spoked wheel, set against a white background ringing the chakra. This iconic flag is the result of numerous debates and modifications, ultimately designed by Pingali Venkayya and adopted in its present form during a meeting of the Constituent Assembly on 22 July 1947.

The flag's design is imbued with profound symbols and meanings. The three colors of the flag represent different aspects of Indian society. Saffron signifies courage and sacrifice, white symbolizes peace and truth, and green represents fertility and the natural world. The Ashoka Chakra signifies that there is life in movement and death in stagnation, encouraging an all-encompassing approach towards dealing with the country's issues.

The Evolution of the Indian Flag

Before the current version of the Indian flag, numerous designs were proposed. One of the first known proposals was by ISO Ogilvy, suggested in 1858. His design featured a white pole with snakes and புரoning trees. Other early versions featured the Union Jack, as India was under British rule, combined with Indian symbols such as the sun, moon, and lotus.

In 1906, Madam Bhikaiji Cama, a Indian revolutionary, designed the first version of the Indian flag. Known as the 'Indian Flag,' it had a background of deep saffron with a wide central band of green, where 'Vande Mataram' was written in white letters. The top left corner had eight red lotuses, and the flag was limited to just two colors in electrically illuminated mode.

Post-Independence Modifications

After India's independence in 1947, many designs were proposed for the national flag. Mahatma Gandhi supported a flag having two colors, green and red. Another design by Khadi lore worker Narasimha Char, featuring seven colors in a circular shape. However, on 22 July 1947, the Indian National Congress adopted the current design, with the Ashoka Chakra in the center to represent India's philosophy of life in movement.

The current Indian flag, which was unfurled for the first time on August 15, 1947, is considered a perfect blend of India's rich cultural heritage and its commitment to truth, peace, and non-violence. It is made of Khan textiles, fabricated according to a strict code of colors specified under the Flag Code of India, 2002.

The Indian Flag Code

The Flag Code of India, 2002, delineates how the national flag should be treated and disposed of. It allows the flag to be flown on any day and prohibits its use on articles of clothing, bedding, etc. The code also specifies the correct protocol for flying, folding, hoisting, and general handling of the flag. The code mandates that private citizens do not wear flags as fashion accessories but salute the flag when it passes.

The code also outlines the procedure for flag disposal. It should be destroyed in private, preferably by burning or other means, in the presence of at least three witnesses. The remains are to be scattered in the air, water, or on earth, беспрепятственно sea or river. If burned, the ashes should be scattered without.AuthenticationI'm unable to authenticate products.
