Biblical Scriptures for Promoting Peace

By Joshua Robinson
AD

Peace, a concept deeply ingrained in various cultures and religious traditions, remains a universal aspiration. Scriptures from different religions offer profound insights into achieving and maintaining peace. They emphasize not just the absence of conflict but also the presence of harmony, serenity, and tranquility.

In this exploration, we delve into scriptures that promote peace, focusing on two major religious texts: The Holy Bible and The Holy Quran, along with other sacred texts. We'll explore how these texts define peace, provide guidelines for cultivating peace, and offer insights into resolving conflicts.

Peace in The Holy Bible

The Holy Bible, a cornerstone of Christianity, is replete with references to peace. It often uses the word "shalom" (שלום), a Hebrew word that encompasses concepts of completeness, wholeness, and peace.

The New Testament, specifically, provides practical steps towards achieving inner peace and unity. It encourages believers to "be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer" (Romans 12:12, NIV) and to "live in harmony with one another" (Romans 12:16, NIV).

Shalom: Completeness and Peace

Shalom represents the wholeness of one's being - physical, mental, spiritual, and relational. In Genesis 25:27, it is described as "a man complete, whole," reflecting the concept of well-being and completeness.

When Joseph's brothers expressed remorse for their past actions, Joseph responded, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your children." (Genesis 50:19-21, NIV). Here, Joseph's forgiveness and acceptance of their past actions reflect a spiritual completeness, fostering peace.

Peacemakers and Peacemaking

Biblical peacemaking involves actively working to resolve conflicts and promote unity. Jesus Christ said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God" (Matthew 5:9, NIV), emphasizing the importance of peacemakers in His eyes. Paul echoed this in his letter to the Romans, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone" (Romans 12:18, NIV).

Peacemaking also involves interpersonal reconciliation. Jesus taught, "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to that person; then come and offer your gift" (Matthew 5:23-24, NIV). Here, He emphasizes the priority of resolving interpersonal conflicts before seeking divine blessings.

Peace in The Holy Quran

The Holy Quran, the sacred text of Muslims, also emphasizes peace and provides practical guidelines to achieve it. Allah (SWT) says, "And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend." (Quran 41:34)

This verse encourages believers to combat evil with good, fostering peaceful coexistence. The concept of peace (Salaam) in Islam encompasses a wide range of meanings, including safety, security, welfare, and peace of mind.

Peaceful Coexistence and Hospitality

Islam emphasizes peaceful coexistence within the society and hospitality towards others. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "He is not a believer who eats his fill while his neighbor is hungry" (Bukhari & Muslim). This teaches empathy and the importance of understanding the needs of others.

The Quran also emphasizes the importance of hospitality and treats it as a divinely recommended practice. Allah (SWT) says, "And when the believers saw the Confederate forces, they said, 'This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us. Allah and His Messenger told us the truth.' [..] Giving food, though desiring wealth, to the near of kin...(Quran 33:22-23).

Grievance Mediation and Conflict Resolution

The Quran provides guidelines for resolving disputes and mitigating conflicts. It encourages believers to seek peaceful solutions. Allah (SWT) says, "And so by saying, "Our Lord, decide between us and our people [i.e., the People of the Book] in truth" and shortly thereafter you were the ones to be defeated; and Allah awards [His favor] to none without His doing." (Quran 5:19)

AD

Proper language and respectful communication are fundamental in conflict resolution. The Quran emphasizes this saying, "And do not speak to the People of the Book except in the best manner, except those who have transgressed [in eliciting your anger] among them" (Quran 29:46).

Reflecting on these scriptures, it becomes evident that each contains a unifying theme of peace. They emphasize the importance of inner peace, harmonious coexistence, and conflict resolution. Moreover, they highlight the role of empathy, forgiveness, and hospitality in cultivating a peaceful society.

In essence, all these scriptures stress the need for individuals to strive for peace within themselves and to also work towards promoting peace in their communities. By emulating the values and teachings of our respective faiths, we can foster a world of genuine peace, understanding, and tolerance. So, let us strive for peace, inspire others to do the same, and together, create a more harmonious world.
